7-Day Guatemala Itinerary: The Best Things To Do, See, and Eat

No matter where you live, it’s not uncommon to desire an escape from your day-to-day life and journey into a different part of the world. Taking a getaway that will offer both relaxation and stimulation is the perfect way to rejuvenate your spirit and reignite that spark for life! If you have been dreaming of such a getaway, we have prepared the most excellent 7-day itinerary in the incredible country of Guatemala, promising the adventure of a lifetime!

You may be unfamiliar with Guatemala or have considered visiting there, yet it offers many unique and marvelous experiences. There is also a huge misconception that the country is an unsafe place to visit for foreign travelers, especially women. While there is inherent risk in all travel, being aware of your surroundings and making wise decisions helps to keep you safe abroad. Nevertheless, if you’re looking for an experience that will create lifetime-lasting memories, the Land of Eternal Spring is calling you! We’ll show you how to spend the perfect week in Guatemala, highlighting the spectacular landmarks, otherworldly natural treasures, inviting culture, and mouth-watering delicacies.

Guatemala Safety Concerns

Before we jump into our ideal 7-day Guatemalan itinerary, we want to address safety. There are many varied portrayals of this country and Central America in society, and it’s natural to be unsure or have some concerns regarding security while you travel.

Truthfully, from an almost all-woman team that has lived and traveled in Guatemala for years, the country is quite safe and very welcoming to foreigners. In fact, locals are excited to welcome you and directly include you in their cultural practices! Visiting Guatemala lets you have a truly immersive cultural exchange.

As with any other travel destination, it’s recommended you follow standard safety procedures. Additionally, ask other travelers about cities and regions you plan to visit ahead of time to get an idea of which zones you may want to avoid. For the best advice, however, ask the locals upon arrival for suggestions. They will be eager to help and advise you on the best places to visit! While out and about, avoid demonstrating expensive items on you. Finally, once night falls, it’s recommended to opt for a reliable transportation method to return to your lodging rather than walking alone.

One Week Itinerary For Guatemala

Despite being small in size, Guatemala contains multitudes! From aromatic coffee plantations to soaring volcanos and vibrant cities, there are no limits to how you can design your one-of-a-kind Guatemalan adventure. Still, considering how busy you are, we’ve gone the extra mile and created one for you! Of course, you’re free to alter our 7-day Guatemalan itinerary as you see fit.

Day 1: Guatemala City and Antigua

It’s most likely you’ll fly into Guatemala City, the country’s capital. As soon as you land, we suggest heading to Antigua directly to take full advantage of your time in this beautiful location. The trip to Antigua lasts about an hour but it can be longer due to traffic. While you’re traveling, use this time to take in your first sights of Guatemala and prepare for your trip.

If you’re flying into Guatemala City late, we suggest you book a hotel for the night in Zones 10 or 14, as they’re close to the airport and are quite safe. You can even choose to stay in the city for a day or two. If that’s the case, we suggest heading to Good Hotel in Zone 4. This is an up-and-coming neighborhood boasting an impressive music and art scene, lively restaurants, and emerging small businesses.

We can’t emphasize enough how much Antigua, the country’s former capital, has to offer! Begin your adventure by checking out some of the most popular landmarks, such as the Cathedral de San Jose, Parque Central, and Arco de San Catalina. Speaking of the “Arco”, this is one of the country’s most historically significant landmarks! The arch is visually spectacular and also features tunnels that secretly take nuns from one point to another all over the city.

There’s so much to see in Antigua, so visit the local shops and street food vendors. If you’re roaming around on Thursday, be sure to try “chuchitos” and pan con chile. Head to the corner of 1st Avenue and 4th Street for the best ones from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM Monday-Firday. On the other hand, for dinner, pay a visit to Barriga Llena, one of our favorite restaurants run by local young chefs who are passionate about serving fresh and traditional ingredients with a modern twist at a fair price. Don’t miss out on the dumplings if they’re on the ever-changing menu!

Day 2: Antigua - Cooking Class at Cuscun & Cerro de la Cruz

Once you wake up, grab a delicious breakfast in your hotel and take a stroll to find your new favorite local coffee shop! A few of our favorites in the area are Artista de Cafe, 12 Onzas, Coffea, and Cafe Boheme. Guatemalans love their java, and take coffee production very seriously. One sip of it, and you’ll know exactly what we mean!

Now, we’re heading to an activity that will not only fill your soul but your stomach as well! While in Antigua, you should most definitely plan on taking a cooking class at Cuscun Cooking School. Owned by a dear friend of Heart’s, Joaquin, Cuscun offers hands-on cooking classes where you’ll learn all about local ingredients, the traditional way to prepare tortillas, and multiple dishes which you’ll get to savor at the end of the experience! They offer daily classes at 10 AM and 4 PM, but be sure to contact them for availability on the day you’d like to visit. If you’re looking for even more cultural immersion, Cuscun offers a market tour before the cooking class where you'll help source whatever ingredients you’re using for your meal. The price for a cooking class begins at $80 and can be booked through their website. After a great meal, put your most comfortable shoes on because we’re going on an exhilarating hike.

Antigua is known for its many impressive natural sites in its vicinity, one of which is Cerro de la Cruz. This scenic mirador offers some of the most breathtaking views overlooking the city. The hike isn’t too taxing and you can also take a tuk-tuk to the top, so it’s accessible for all!

Day 3 - Day Trip From Antigua

One of the best ways to explore the outside of Antigua is to visit some of the smaller pueblos, or villages, located to the south. This will take you out of the city and show you a snapshot of life in a smaller Guatemalan town. There are a variety of them, offering many activities, so you can choose your own adventure.

Want to tickle your tastebuds with an artisanal chocolate tour or an in-depth look at local fruit and wine production? Check out San Juan del Obispo! Want an insider look into the iconic, colorful chicken buses, which provide transportation around much of the country? Stop by Ciudad Vieja! Interested in learning about cultural craftsmanship such as jade jewelry and hand-woven textiles? Visit San Pedro las Huertas and San Antonio Calientes! Go to San Miguel Dueñas to learn about craft breweries and macadamia nut farming, or San Cristobal el Alto for a window into the ancient traditions of plant-based natural medicine. No matter what catches your interest, you’re sure to have a powerful and eye-opening experience by exploring Antigua’s surrounding pueblos.

If you're a coffee lover or even mildly interested, take advantage of your location in the heart of coffee-growing land here in Guatemala and take a tour of a local farm, known as a finca. One of Heart of Travel’s longest and most beloved partnerships is with Don Jose, a proprietor of a small family-owned coffee farm. Here, you can get an in-depth look at the journey a small coffee seedling takes to end up as the delicious and aromatic beverage that is so treasured worldwide. You can learn Don Jose’s history, meet and share an authentic Guatemalan meal with his family, and learn more about the coffee industry at large. Naturally, you will indulge in a tasting of freshly brewed coffee prepared right before your eyes!

Day 4 - Climb a Volcano

You’ll find volcanoes practically everywhere you turn as you travel to Guatemala. Just the sight of these majestic peaks should prove a tantalizing opportunity for the adventurous traveler. Even more thrilling is the fact that some of these volcanoes are still active! And yes, you can climb them!

Volcan de Acatenango promises some of the most breathtaking scenery and views, but be prepared for a challenging climb. The journey to the base camp takes about 4-6 hours and is rated as difficult. From the camp, it is another hour to the summit, with the last bit being very steep. Many tours involve an overnight stay on the volcano, allowing you to see mind-blowing nighttime lava eruption views! Tackling Acatengango is the perfect activity for travelers with an unquenchable thirst for adrenaline, so lace up your boots and prepare for the adventure of a lifetime - if you’re up for the challenge, of course!

Alternatively, Volcan de Pacaya is an ideal climb for those looking for a more moderate volcano experience. On the slopes of this iconic volcano, you can enjoy gooey marshmallows or even a pizza lunch cooked from the hot air shafts that escape from the volcano’s interior. Don’t worry, you;re in no danger of being harmed by lava, and your guides will be with you every step of the way as you marvel at this natural wonder! As if cooking food with volcano heat wasn’t cool enough, you can also visit our friends Jorge and Fernando at the LavaShop and purchase some incredible artisanal items from volcanic rock collected right on the Pacaya!

If this is your first time climbing a volcano and you’re wondering what to pack - we got you! First, comfortable waterproof hiking boots are a must, preferably ones with ankle support. We also recommend walking poles or sticks to help with your balance on uneven terrain. You can often rent them from your tour company if you don’t have yours to bring. As for clothing, think layers. The weather on the volcanic slopes can vary, with strong wind and rain being a possibility. For that reason, we suggest packing a sweater and/or waterproof jacket.  Depending on the season, surprise showers can come out of nowhere!

Day 5 & 6 - Lake Atitlan and Its Surrounding Villages

The last few days of your 7-day itinerary in Guatemala are reserved for the incomparable Lake Atitlan and its breathtaking surroundings. Step from the country’s buzzing urban atmosphere into where the true jewels lie: in her stunning nature.

Dubbed the “Lake Como of Central America”, you can only imagine the wonder that awaits you at Lake Atitlan. The serene environment and surroundings are the perfect place for exploration and relaxation, and wait until you see what the nearby towns and villages have to offer! Since many of them have unique personalities, we recommend dedicating at least two days to visit them to experience their true glory!

First up is San Antonio Palopo. This village is the least populated by tourists, so don’t expect to see too many foreigners on the streets. Rather than being a detraction, this is a huge benefit of the town, meaning you will get a more authentic view into the everyday life of a Guatemalan pueblo. San Antonio Palopo is renowned for its artisanal ceramics, so be sure to pick up some souvenirs for yourself and your loved ones! For some of the highest quality pieces in town, visit our friends at Ceramica Maya! We promise that you will be absolutely blown away.

After exploring San Antonio Palopo, head over to Santa Caterina Palopo. Stemming from a tumultuous past, the village’s inhabitants have taken the time to carefully hand-paint each of the 850 town’s buildings in traditional colors and patterns to make it an appealing place to visitors. They have been more than successful in their mission, transforming their home into a thriving destination with the power of art.

On the sixth day of your immersive Guatemalan experience, we suggest exploring the town and then visiting San Juan La Laguna. This charming town highlights the country’s culture and specialties. From thought-provoking art to intricate textile weaving, the locals will gladly show you the detailed work that goes into creating each piece. Below we have selected some of the region’s shining stars in terms of product quality and impact on the local community. Be sure to visit some of our picks to support small, local businesses that lift the Guatemalan people and culture!

Casa Flor Ixcaco: Learn about the history, tradition, and practices of this women-driven weaving cooperative. Founded to share the beauty of these stunning traditional textiles and provide ethical employment to local women, learning about our partners at Casa Flor Ixcaco is sure to be a highlight of your time in Guatemala! You will have a chance to purchase an incredible piece (or several) from their shop, so bring a card or some cash.

Licor Marrón: Sample a scrumptious array of local and traditional dishes at this restaurant run by our partners from Casa Flor Ixcaco. Best of all, try the delectable drink, Marrón, that dates back generations. Its name is derived from a rich brown color, stemming from the ingredients that give the drink its mouthwatering flavor profile, including cocoa, cinnamon, and spices. We are sure that you will be clamoring for seconds!

La Voz Coffee Cooperative: Get a different perspective on coffee production as you learn not only about the production process but variations in coffee plants that distinguish the final result in the beans. Furthermore, gain a macro-view of coffee production in Guatemala as you learn about the cooperative and its dedication to supporting local farmers and families while prioritizing quality with a sustainable, ethical business model.

Asocioción Q’oomanel: If you are interested in natural and plant-based products and medicines, this association is the place for you! Here you will learn about the production of items associated with personal health and hygiene, all fabricated naturally. The association provides ethical, sustainable economic opportunities to the local community while promoting education on the natural wisdom that is passed through generations.
