What’s Going On In Cuba? A 2023 Update

7-Day Cuba Itinerary: The Best Things To Do, See, and Eat

Cuba is undeniably vibrant, filled with music, warmth, and a unique beauty that captivates many. However, the true essence of this island lies beyond its picturesque landscapes and lively streets. For travelers seeking a deeper connection, Cuba offers an opportunity to immerse themselves in the lives of its people.

Engaging directly with locals allows you to hear their stories—stories of resilience, creativity, and the everyday realities faced by Cubans, particularly during a time when emigration rates are at an all-time high. These narratives provide profound insights into the hopes and challenges of a community navigating change.

Supporting small businesses in Cuba’s burgeoning private sector is a vital part of this journey. By choosing to buy handmade crafts, savor locally sourced meals, and participate in workshops led by Cuban artisans and artists, travelers can make a tangible impact on the lives of those who call this island home.

Cuba is now more accessible to U.S. travelers, who can visit legally under the Support for the Cuban People general license. This opens the door to a unique educational experience that goes beyond the typical tourist itinerary. As travelers explore the island, they can engage with the rich culture, history, and resilient spirit of the Cuban people. Visiting local markets, staying in private accommodations, and dining at family-run restaurants not only enhances their journey but also contributes to the livelihoods of small business owners. By choosing to travel to Cuba, visitors help support the island's private sector, fostering economic growth and sustainable development in communities that truly need it.

Still, one thing that can always overwhelm travelers about Cuba is its size. You may not know this, but it is the largest island country in the Caribbean! For this reason, you may imagine that it could be challenging to curate the ideal 7-day Cuba itinerary. With this amount of time, we highly recommend focusing on just Havana and Pinar del Rio to have a relaxed and immersive experience.

Where to Stay in Cuba

Before we dive into the specifics of our 7-day Cuba itinerary, it’s essential to consider the type of experience you want in Cuba. Rather than opting for luxury resorts, we encourage you to embrace the authentic charm of staying in casas particulares. This legal option for U.S. citizens not only provides a more immersive experience but also allows you to connect with the local community. By choosing these family-run accommodations, you’ll receive superior service and enjoy delicious, home-cooked meals that reflect the true flavors of Cuba. This approach invites you to step out of your comfort zone and discover the genuine heart of this vibrant island and is fully compliant with the Support of the Cuban People general license requirements and restrictions. Note, that US citizens are not permitted to stay in government-operated hotels.

No matter your budget, we highly recommend considering a traditional Casa Particular for your stay in Cuba. These private homes offer a warm welcome from the owners and a cozy place to sleep. In Havana, you’ll find a wider range of options, including upscale properties that operate like boutique hotels, providing a blend of comfort and style. In smaller towns like Viñales, accommodations tend to be simpler, yet they remain clean, comfortable, and safe, ideally located for easy exploration.

All the casas Heart of Travel collaborates with feature rooms equipped with ensuite bathrooms, Wi-Fi access, air conditioning, and a fridge, along with clean drinking water readily available. Staying in a Casa Particular not only offers an economical option but also allows for a more immersive experience in Cuban life. You may even have the chance to enjoy a delicious meal prepared by your hosts.

The Ideal One-Week Cuba Tour

No need to wonder if seven days are enough to visit Cuba - our detailed itinerary will answer every question you may have. As always, this is our guide, which can be customized to your tastes as you see fit. No matter what, prepare for an adventure that just might make Cuba your favorite destination in the world!

There are so many incredible parts of Cuba to visit, and there is much more than just what is included in this seven-day itinerary. We have chosen to focus on Havana and Vinales. In order to do these locations justice, we can’t take more time away from either. However, if there is another area you would rather visit, or you have already visited one of these cities and want to see somewhere new, there is much more to experience. At Heart of Travel, we offer trips to a variety of locations. Check out our full 2025 Cuba trip catalog here

For first-time visitors to Cuba, our recommendation for how to allocate your time over one week is as follows:

Days 1 - 3: Havana

Day 4 - 6: Vinales

Day 7: Havana

This follows the itinerary for our Exploring the Island’s Past, Present, and Future group trip. For special connections to native Cubans and the chance to be welcomed into their hearts and homes, join us in one of our itineraries for a glimpse into the real Cuba.

Day 1 - Havana Nueva

Our 7-day Cuba itinerary kicks off in Havana (oh-na-na), the vibrant capital famously celebrated by Cuban-American pop star Camila Cabello. We're here to ensure you start your adventure in style!

To begin your journey, we recommend a pre-arranged airport pick-up to take you directly to your casa, which can be organized through your accommodation or through us at Heart of Travel. Settle into a charming Casa Particular in Old Havana, ideally in the Loma del Angel area. We suggest Casa Cuarteles or Casa Vitrales for their welcoming atmosphere and prime location.

After settling in, immerse yourself in the local culture by joining a salsa class at La Casona del Son, where you'll learn some moves that will serve you well throughout your trip. Then, hop on a bici taxi for a fun ride to dinner at Yarini, a local favorite known for its delicious cuisine.

Day 2 - La Habana Vieja

La Habana Vieja, the city’s eastern part, is characterized by a mix of Baroque and Neoclassical architectural styles, which plays a large part in Havana Vieja becoming a UNESCO World Heritage Site. While there are many guided tours in this part of the city as well, our favorite way to explore this part of the city is to go on your own time and allow yourself to get lost. Havana Vieja is an excellent place to wander, since you’ll never know what you’ll discover around every corner!

That said, spending some time with a seasoned guide to give you additional insight into the city’s past and present and point out hidden gems and important tips is well worth it! Personally, one of our favorite ways to see the city is the combination walking and Bici-Taxi tour. This tour provides you with a good lay of the land for independent exploration, as well as a general overview of the island’s history and current political and economic climate. We will also point out some of our favorite hidden gems such as shops, bars, cafés, art galleries, restaurants, and small businesses worth checking out and supporting.

Make sure to fuel up at lunch after this invigorating tour. For a special experience that is unavailable to any casual visitor to Cuba, our group trip offers the chance to learn about a central Cuban custom: Dómino. It is played everywhere, from the streets and parks to cafes and homes, bringing together people of all ages and backgrounds. As you play, you'll hear stories about the game's history and how it has become a beloved and integral part of Cuban society. We will visit our friend's house for a very traditional and immersive experience with some of our local friends as they share this uniquely Cuban pastime with us.

Take some time to rest or explore at your own pace before dinner. Get ready for a truly incredible culinary experience at El Cocinero: an incredibly hip and modern establishment and offers an extensive menu with everything ranging from freshly caught seafood, veggie dishes, and mouthwatering desserts. The cocktails here are absolutely divine, so be sure not to skip on these!

After dinner, you can head back to your accommodation, where we are sure you will get plenty of rest. If you are still up for more, head next store to La Fábrica de Arte Cubano to see everything from photography to sculptures, fashion to architecture, as well as film, live music, and much more. This mixed-medium art space contains multiple galleries, stages, dance floors, and social areas for eating and drinking, and is frequented by both locals and foreigners on a nightly basis.

Day 3

Today will be dedicated to enjoying the beautiful Mar Azul beach, located just 30 minutes outside of Havana Vieja. Here, you can bask in the coastline’s serenity, relishing a blissful morning and afternoon by the sea. Take a refreshing dip in the crystal-clear waters or simply unwind on the sandy shores, soaking up the sun's warm embrace. You can treat yourself to a lunch of freshly caught seafood, savoring the flavors of the ocean while dining right on the beach! Additionally, local vendors stroll along the shoreline, tempting you with their enticing selection of fresh tamales, a delightful treat we highly recommend indulging in. We recommend bringing cash for today ($5-$20 USD) as you may want to purchase additional beverages, souvenirs, or snacks while at the beach.

Later, take a Havana Street Art Tour with local artists. For our Heart of Travel group trip, we have a tour with Fichu, a passionate Cuban street artist and dear friend, who will personally share the stories behind his captivating artwork that adorns the streets of La Habana Vieja. You will delve into the hidden symbolism and socio-political messages embedded within his murals, gaining insight into the artist's hopes and fears for the future of Cuba, as well as the struggles artists often face. This tour offers an unfiltered and uncensored look into Cuban art, culture, and economy, providing a deeper understanding and appreciation for Cuba's emerging generation of artists, creators, and change-makers. As you explore the colorful streets of Havana, you'll witness firsthand how these artists use their creativity to express themselves and comment on the social issues that shape their lives.

On our group trip, you will have the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to share an intimate night with our friends and local artists. Here, you'll get to meet local musicians and hear them play during a private concert just for your party. Likewise, together you can discuss music and the arts in Cuba during this private concert with a duo of young Cuban musicians and composers. Cuba is home to a thriving art and music scene with everything ranging from classical musicians to contemporary artists. After listening to their music, we'll share dinner and discussion with a handful of local artists and learn how the arts have helped to depict themes from their country's history and culture, as well as have their voices heard surrounding current events, a task that isn't always easy or safe for all Cubans to do.

Day 4

Today you will transfer to the second destination of our itinerary: Viñales. On the way out, we recommend stopping by the Fusterlandia Community Art project. Fusterlandia is a community-based art project located on the outskirts of Havana where you can admire Cuban artist, José Fuster’s, childlike rough shapes and bright colors in his untrained mosaic compositions. This project began with artist José Fuster turning his residence into a living museum which, slowly but surely, attracted visitors to this small fisherman's neighborhood.

The perfect place to stop for lunch on the way to Viñales is the Finca Agroecológica El Paraíso. Enjoy a meal completely farm-to-table, and so fresh! Expect family style, with a fresh vegetable soup to start, roasted chicken, pork, seafood, rice, beans, and salads. Also, we'll get their signature non-alcoholic cocktail (you can add your own rum if you wish) that is called the AntiStress! There is plenty of food to be had today, so come hungry! After lunch, you can take a short tour of the organic farm the restaurant is located on. Learn more about food production in Cuba, the cost of food on the island, and these farmer's innovative organic farming techniques behind your delicious family-style meal.

Finally, once you arrive in Viñales and settle into your accommodation, you can take part in one of our absolute favorite activities in all of Cuba: a Pig Roast and Farm Party. Nothing says the Cuban countryside like a “lechón asado”. Enjoy the friendly company of the local farmers as we help to roast our very own pig, learn to make mojitos, play dominó, listen to live music, and dance the night away in true guajiro style. There is no official end time for a pig roast but people usually spend 3 to 4 hours soaking in the breathtaking setting and warmth of your hosts.

Day 5

If you’ve been wondering where the ever-famous Cuban cigars come from, this beautiful town is your answer. The natural surroundings here are from another world and will give you a glimpse into Cuba’s less urban side. Some highlights of the region are tobacco farm tours, organic farm visits, and exploring intricate cave systems.

To start, treat yourself to a visit to Vinales Valley. You can hike or ride horses - whatever catches your fancy! This is a great place to get a genuine glimpse into the lives of Cuban farmers, with breathtaking views that showcase their daily realities. You can also enjoy lunch here in the valley. If you join our group trip, you will have the chance to visit our friend Alejandro’s home with a coffee and tobacco farm. Savor the distinct taste of local coffee, relish a hand-rolled Cuban cigar, and the refreshing notes of the canchánchara, a classic Cuban cocktail. During our time here, delve deeper into the intricacies of the tobacco industry and gain insights into the workings of the island's economy. This experience will foster a profound appreciation for the craftsmanship involved in creating products and experiences for visitors while showcasing the positive impact our presence can have on the lives of individuals within the community.

Make sure that, while in Vinales, you enjoy one of the most delicious local beverages: Guarapo. It is made by extracting the sweet juice from sugarcane stalks through a process known as pressing. The sugarcane juice is then typically served chilled, providing a refreshing and natural thirst quencher. With its origins deeply rooted in Cuba's history and agricultural heritage, guarapo embodies the tropical essence of the island. Its smooth and subtly sweet flavor, coupled with its invigorating qualities, makes guarapo a beloved choice among locals and visitors alike, offering a delightful taste of Cuba's vibrant culinary traditions.

Day 6

One place you simply cannot miss in Vinales is Los Acuáticos. Los Acuáticos is a small community up in the mountain range of Viñales where you can enjoy an epic sunrise. This town gets its name from the nearby water pools that are said to have healing and restorative powers. It is an amazing time to take a hike and appreciate the breathtaking Cuban natural landscape. This experience allows you some exercise, time in nature, and a glimpse into life in rural Cuba off the beaten path.

Later, you will need to return to Havana for your final day on your 7-day Cuba Itinerary. Head to La Lamparilla 361 for lunch, which presents a harmonious blend of traditional Cuban favorites infused with a contemporary twist. Dishes like fresh fish, ropa vieja, roasted pork, and croquettes all come out hot and delicious. And don't forget to quench your thirst with their exquisite selection of cocktails, their daiquiri flavors are seasonal and absolutely phenomenal!

In the afternoon, you have a range of options for your remaining Havana adventure. Check out a local Salsa class, take a Cuban cooking class, treat yourself to some pampering with a professional massage, take some photos with a professional photographer or get a tattoo.

For dinner, another fantastic restaurant you shouldn’t pass up is Antojos. Take your pick from classic Cuban dishes with a modern twist. They source fresh, local ingredients and we are fans of their ribs, picadillo and ropa vieja in particular.

Day 7

For the final day in our 7-Day Cuba Itinerary, we must begin with one of the most iconic Cuban activities that there is. You didn’t think you would visit La Habana and not have the chance to cruise around in a classic car, did you? Prepare to be awed on a Havana Classic Car Tour, by not only the beautiful cars but also the ingenuity of the Cuban people who have kept these cars running for more than 50 years. Out of necessity, due to embargos and lack of materials, Cubans have had to keep their cars in commission using sheer brainpower.

Afterwards, a unique opportunity offered exclusively on our Exploring the Island’s Past, Present, and Future group trip is to visit our friend Yuri at the Recycling Project. Yuri is a mechanical engineer who, nearly 30 years ago, decided to leave his job and venture out on his own. He started a project to recycle and create plastic items using materials recovered in the backyard of his parents' house. During our visit, you will learn about the entire recycling process he has developed, as well as the history and growth of the private sector in Cuba from the 1990s to the present day. Yuri's story is a testament to the resilience and creativity of Cuban entrepreneurs who continue to thrive despite the odds. We'll also enjoy lunch with  Yuri and have time to chat and learn more about his project.

For our final dinner in Havana, you can’t go wrong with La Guarida. Nestled in a historic building with a rich cinematic past, this gem of a paladar is a must-visit for anyone exploring the vibrant streets of Havana. As you walk up the grand staircase, you'll feel like you're stepping into a different era, where every corner holds a story.

La Guarida isn't just about the ambiance, though it's undoubtedly captivating. The food here is nothing short of delicious, offering a perfect blend of traditional Cuban flavors with a modern twist. With panoramic views of the city and the ocean, it's the perfect spot to unwind with a cocktail in hand and soak in the Havana sunset. Come hungry, as there is plenty of delicious food to be had!

That brings us to the end of our 7-day Cuba Itinerary exploring the iconic cities of Havana and Vinales.
